An Illustrated Talk Presented By David Davison
American painters transitioned from the idylls of their Hudson River School landscapes once they heard the drums of war. They took on the challenge of depicting the tension of combat as well as the calm of daily army life. They showed heroism, death, and post-war healing of veterans. Reviewing the work of American artists during the war provides a profound and beautiful window into the conflict, how it was experienced on the front lines and perceived back home. The great American painter Winslow Homer saw war first-hand, and he was the foremost illustrator of the conflict. His ground-breaking painting of a moment in the bloody Battle of the Wilderness in 1864 gets special attention.
Davison has given many illustrated talks at museums and other venues, including the President’s College at the University of Hartford; New Britain Museum of American Art; the Mattatuck Museum (Waterbury CT); Schiller Shoreline Institute of Lifelong Learning; and Guilford Public Library. Speaker Series - Isabel Margolin: Creating Mosaics
A Talk and Lesson in Mosaics
Join us for this interactive hands-on event. You will have the opportunity to create a mosaic that will be returned to Becket Arts Center and auctioned off.
Isabel will give a short presentation on how she began making mosaics followed by a brief lesson.
“In the spring of 2009, I took my first course in mosaics, one that focused on the indirect method, a technique that I have employed ever since. For the indirect method, I place my materials face-side-down on sticky paper, not knowing the final results of my design until I turn the piece over into a bed of cement. It is through a certain controlled randomness, a willingness to cede one's expectations to gravitational forces and the power of sticky tape that I apply the indirect technique to expand the boundaries of this art form. This is a process of chance, choice, and discovery.”

Lisa Michelle Anderson
An Evening with Lisa Michelle Anderson
Lisa Michelle Anderson’s music is a masterful blend of Americana, folk, and rock, stitched together with the rich, varied experiences of a life lived far beyond her hometown roots in Southeast Kansas. Raised on the country and bluegrass melodies of Dolly Parton, Lisa’s early years were a study in contrast—a small-town girl with a global perspective, thanks to formative years spent in Australia, Iran, and Greece.
Recognition has followed her at every step. From being voted Best Singer-Songwriter by the Minnesota Music Academy to opening for legends like Warren Zevon, Marianne Faithfull, and The Jayhawks, Lisa’s career is marked by milestones that speak to her talent and tenacity. Her recent singles, including "Joy Callin'," have garnered critical acclaim –– (melodies that are “simply breathtaking” (Indie Press); “the most gorgeous lead vocals” (Vents Magazine); “one of the catchiest and most beautiful voices we’ve ever heard” (Bored City).
Her upcoming full-length LP, Get to Somewhere, produced by Johnny Irion, is a collection of lived experiences and true stories that shaped her. Stories about roller skating rinks, summer love, falling in love with someone’s voice, traveling to where Joni Mitchell wrote her song Carey, the family diner purchased in 1948, driving to California from Kansas at 18, and working as a knife thrower's assistant, walking around cemeteries, self-doubt, and the notion that tomorrow always brings another day. Get to Somewhere is about leaving one place behind and finding another, both in the world and within oneself. A journey across landscapes, through time, and into the heart, reflecting miles traveled and the weight of standing still.

About Rick Shrum: “I have taught African drumming for over 40 years, engaging students in schools, summer camps, nursing homes, rehab centers, private parties and at Berkshire Pulse in Great Barrington. I have studied traditional west African rhythms with master teachers such as Bolocada Conde, Namori Keita, and my first teacher, Arthur Hull. Though I work in Great Barrington as a nurse, I have lived in Becket for almost ten years. In short, I have the rhythm in me and love sharing it with others.”
